Maryland Board-Approved Online Continuing Education (CE) Courses for Beauty Professionals

Continuing Education Is Now Mandatory for License Renewal (HB1600). Beginning January 1, 2026, all Maryland cosmetologists, hairstylists, estheticians, and nail technicians must complete six (6) hours of State Board–approved continuing education to renew their license.

Maryland Continuing Education
Course Hour Requirements

House Bill 1600 requires Continuing Education (CE) requirements for licensees include a total of 6 hours, divided between required and elective topics. 

Required Topics – 2 hours total. Must cover Health, Safety, Welfare, Sanitation, and/or Board Laws/Regulations. You only need to complete a total of 2 hours from these required 5 categories. 

Elective Topics-4 hours total. Electives are courses chosen based on individual interests, as long as they fall within the scope of practice for your license type. Examples of elective topics include Business, the practice of cosmetology, esthetics, and nail techniques, and Product Knowledge. 

Licensees are required to complete 2 hours of required topics and 4 hours of elective topics, for a total of 6 CE hours.

Domestic Violence Awareness Training
(1 Hour)

Professionals will learn to recognize the signs of domestic violence; learn strategies to navigate conversations with clients who may be victims of domestic violence; learn how to listen to and communicate with victims of domestic violence; and gain resources to connect clients with and support groups for victims of domestic violence.

All applicants for an original license and all licensees renewing a license must complete a one-hour domestic violence awareness training course as required by HB 1547 (2025).

Are CE courses required for Maryland cosmetologists?

Yes. Beginning January 1, 2026, Maryland law (HB 1600) requires all licensed cosmetologists, estheticians, nail technicians, and senior cosmetologists to complete six (6) hours of Board-approved Continuing Education (CE) during each renewal cycle. Is the Domestic Violence Awareness Training required in Maryland?

Yes. As of January 1, 2026, HB 1547 requires all Maryland beauty professionals to complete a 1-hour Domestic Violence Awareness Training for both original licensure and license renewal.

Do I need to submit my certificate to the Board?

At this time, licensees may submit proof of completion to the Board if requested. It is recommended that you retain your certificate in a safe and accessible location.

Does this course teach me how to intervene or report abuse?

No. This course does not train professionals to investigate, counsel, or intervene. It teaches awareness, professionalism, boundaries, and appropriate resource sharing within scope.
